Société A la Place Clichy
Founded in 1882, “A la Place Clichy” was a historically significant specialist carpet dealer. In 1927, the company started selling carpets created from cartoons by contemporary artists, whose works were exhibited with great success at the Musée Galliera in Paris.
The many artists involved include Francis Jourdain, Fayet, Benedictus, Crevel, Siclis, Yvonne Fourgeaud, Solange Patry-Bié, Cless, Gaudissard, Dangon, Gislain, Coudyser, Jacques Vergé, Kaehrling, Raion, Madeleine Dayot and Doutrelingue.
Defining the Art Deco style is an unusually difficult task because there will always be a degree of ambiguity between the works produced in this period and those exhibited at the “Exposition des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels”.
Two schools of thought are discernible, however, with a clear distinction between them. The first draws upon traditional French elegance and is heir to a creative past, with exponents such as Gaudissard, Ruhlmann and Leleu. The second is more revolutionary, and is represented by the work of Léger, Lurcat and Delaunay.
